    The Role of Rhetorical Reading
    • Define Rhetoric
    • Rhetorical Reading is more important than Critical Thinking.
    • Identifying how the readers read the context that is kind of constructive reading they desire the students to do.
    • This is the kind of meaning building we would like students to do, and rhetorical reading is one strategy that may help them do it. (pg. 182)
    • Help students
    • Our first attempt at “suggestive” teaching introducing the students to the concept of rhetorical reading and encouraging them to use it found that while students could identify the rhetorical reading strategy in the reading of others, they were less successful at using it (pg.182).
    • Could this really help students while reading?
    • Teaching students to read rhetorically may be difficult.

Define: Rhetoric; the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques
    • We were interested in how readers go about “constructing” meaning and the constructive strategies they use to do so. pg171
    • Our reading of the text, obviously also a constructed one, but one constructed which the benefit of a full knowledge of the source and context, include two main facts and two central claims. Pg. 172
    • “Early transaction” sets up an hypothesis about both the context of the text and it’s source. Pg. 173
    • Creating a multi-dimensional representation of the text that includes representations of its content, representations of the structure and functions of the text, representations of author’s intention and his own experience and knowledge as a reader of text. Pg174

*They thought that many academic topics would e easier for those with more reading experience. They used a topic that was understandable for both groups.
*Meaning was under a question for both readers, and topic knowledge would function as only one of many possible tools used to build an interception. (pg.171)

    What is “Good Reading”?
Define Rhetoric: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.
    • To interpret any sophisticated text seems to require not only careful reading and prior knowledge, but the ability to read the text in several levels to build multi-faceted representations.pg 170
    • The text is not only understood not only as a content and information, but also as a result of someone’s intentions and has effect on some readers.pg 170
    • “Critical reading involves more than careful reading for content, more than identification of conventional features such as introductions and examples”.pg 170
    • We can observe their use of reading strategies and infer something about the representations they build.pg 170
    • While a content representation is often satisfactory it meets the needs of many pre college read to take a test it falls short with tasks or text which requires analysis and criticism.pg 170
    • Sophisticated difficult text requires the reader to build an equally sophisticated complex representation of meaning.pg 170

    The role of rhetorical reading

Rhetorical and critical reading is important when it comes to reading because it helps understand the text and the authors intention. Rhetorical reading is a strategy that can help students but in order for it to help, they must elaborate representations of meaning and know the strategies to do so. When teaching students rhetorical reading they weren’t so good at it. In order to understand what your reading you must expand your effort and focus on what you’re reading. To teach rhetorical reading and writing to students can be difficult, but teachers will face a real task in helping students.

    The Role of Rhetorical Reading
When teachers teach the students to use the rhetorical strategy they found out that they were less successful. Rhetorical reading is a strategy students could use without having trouble, it is important for reading and writing of any kind. But, they need to know how to use the strategies. Teaching rhetorical can be difficult to teach so teachers will do anything so that the students can understand it.

    Good Reading
The majority of the people tend to use strategies for good reading, for example critical reading makes it a little difficult for some students but for others it’s an easy task. Those who find it harder need to analyze the story carefully and gather all the information to put it in the best way.
