Lamott use metacognition by understanding his own thoughts on his shitty first draft. He also analyzes how poor his writing is on his first draft and how he can improve his errors by making it sound more professional.

Our writing process is to brainstorm and gather ideas to convert them into sentences. As we build our paragraphs we connect our ideas to remain on topic.

Our worst draft writing experience was not being able to relate and not know the significance of the topic, making us block out.

After reading Diaz’s article, it made me realize I wasted paper and pencils on a strategy that teachers claimed was useful for college.

The difference between the two articles is that Lamott’s article is related to metacognition, while Diaz’s article states misconception.

      1. Lamott uses metacognition in the whole article by explaining how she would do her drafts and how she would write what would come to her head even though it was terrible. She also mentioned that even with so much years of experience she would still panic. Everything she thought about she would write down because it can be useful later before the final paper.
      2. Our writing process is writing everything that came to mind and just putting it out there without even thinking about revising and editing.
      3. One of the worst writing drafts that came to mind was when we had a 10 page essay due the next day. We decided to have a girls night out and lost track of time and had to just write anything that came to mind just to have something to turn in.
      4. I believe that they did not prepare us well enough for what college was going to throw at us.

1.Lamott used metacognition in shitty first drafts by focusing on how eventful ideas he would get from shitty drafts. He was knowing about knowing within the drafts.
2.Never sugar coat what needs to be said, say it the way it comes out.
3.What contributes to writing shitty drafts are drunken moments, as well as 4:20. Not all drunk moments or 4:20 moments are at fault, some are very useful and creative, but majority of the time, responses come out pretty shitty.
4.I do believe a few things we learned in high school was a lie. Not every tool that was being taught to us was very beneficial.
Subjective- is one that is not influenced by emotions, opinions, and personal feelings.
Objective- interpretation based on personal feeling, emotion, aesthetics.
5.The difference between both articles is that one story is showing the cons about how high school is demonstrating useless materials that we can use in college versus the pros of the other story how we can get really good ideas from shitty drafts (useless material)

    1. How does Lamott use Metacognition to explain “Shitty First Drafts”?

    • Anne Lamott is stating, “People tend to look at successful writers who are getting their books published and maybe even doing well financially and think that they sit down at their desks every morning feeling like a million dollars, feeling great about who they are and how much talent they have and what a great story they have to tell; that they take in a few deep breaths, push back their sleeves, roll their necks a few times to get all the cricks out, and dive in, typing fully formed passages as fast as a court reporter”. She is using metacognition because even though they are professional writers they still need to think.

    2. What is your writing process?
    • We have to read the article in order to understand what they are saying. We have to be in quiet place in order to concentrate in our paper. We take breaks while writing our paper. We check the spelling and check if it makes sense.

    3. What was your worst writing drafts?
    • Our worst writing drafts were when we had to write for the STAAR because it had to be perfect.

    4. Do you relate to Kelsey Diaz, that everything you learned in high school was a lie?
    • Yes, they would brain wash us to think that we were going to be on our own. And that we would never make it to college. They would always want us to write an essay how they wanted or else it would be wrong. They would always make us put examples or quotes in our essay so it can prove what we were writing about.

    5. What’s the difference between both articles?
    • Lamott used metacognition and Diaz used Misconception.

    1. The Open Question of Transfer
      • Define Empirical

      • Define Myriad

      • We do not know how writing in the major develops. We do not know if writing essays in a biology in an English course helps students write lab reports in biology courses.

      • We do not know which genres or rhetorical strategies truly are universal in the academy nor how to help FYC students recognize each universality.

      • We are not arguing that transfer of writing knowledge cannot happen rather we are arguing that “far transfer” is difficult and that most current incarnations of FYC do not teach for it as explicitly as is necessary.

      • Pedagogy- is the method and practice of teaching

      • Theory- a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.

      Resisting Misconceptions
      • Pedagogy-the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.

      • Theory-a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.

      • There are a range of problems among the writing skills. FYC seems to know how to prepare students whom may enroll in writing skills courses FYC supports the misconceptions based on the nature of writing.

      • Good writing is followed by the 5 paragraph essay, including a thesis in the introduction, body of paragraphs that present a point supporting the thesis, and at last a conclusion.

      • FYC could teach about the ways writing works in the world and how the “tool” of writing is used to mediate various activities. (p. 558)

Systematic Misconception and misdirection of mainstream FYC
•Pedagogy- The method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.

•Theory- A supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.

    •Change misconceptions about writing.

•A way to change the misconceptions about writing is by changing the appearance in standardized testing (SAT) P555

•The traditional way of teaching writing in college is that “writing is writing”. Involving “learn once/ write many.” Basic skills. P555
