Final Project
Take any essay that you have done this semester and elaborate on it using additional academic sources and information.  In a sense you will be doing an expanded research project that illustrates a closer examination of your previous topic.  You will still be graded by how well you demonstrate an argument, organize sentences, write grammatically, and use academic information.

The Purpose of Illustration in Writing. To illustrate means to show or demonstrate something clearly. An effective illustration essay clearly demonstrates and supports a point through the use of evidence. The controlling idea of an essay is called a thesis.

Using CherrĂ­e Moraga’s play titled: “Heroes and Saints” as well as the videos discussed this week (Harvest of Loneliness documentary, Vice Video), discuss issues related to immigration, and or reform, or the current state of policies related to immigration.

Hemingway Short Stories Lab Assignment

OBJECTIVE:
Gather information using online resources to demonstrate research methods. Using Hemingway’s short stories read this week we will demonstrate ability to research and approach readings with context discovered through our research. 

Prewriting:
Journal Response on both short stories

Preliminary Research:
·         Start gathering information by preforming normal Google searches
·         Locate secondary research online
·         Take notes, print, save information for discussion later.

Research Assignment:
  • ·         Using EBSCOhost & JSTOR locate 1 article related to each short story. Also use Discovery Search located in Library/Computer Lab page in the STC website
  • ·         Read article/s or important information related to the short story for discussion tomorrow
  • ·         Demonstrate research ability, highlight, take notes, find specific material related to the readings and discussion

Film Studies Essay: Chasing Amy

Answer One of the following questions in short answer form (2-3 pages).  You will be evaluated
on the following criteria: (1) quality of writing—clarity, organization of paper, good intro, good
closing, well developed body paragraphs; (2) meaningful integration of lecture and film
discussion.

1.      Hooper X is probably the most eccentric character in the film. How does knowing the
CONTEXT of his character reinforce social issues of today?

2.      Throughout the film, Holden seems to be on a path of self-discovery.  Give examples of his
view of BINARY relationships and how they clash with Alyssa’s point of views. Is he a dynamic
character? Does he mature or grow as a person?

3.      One of the themes in the film is the issue of sex.  Do you agree with any of the characters in
their views, or do you have a completely different idea? Use examples in the film to
compare/contrast with your own.
